Guardian website tops online newspaper rankings

Guardian onlineGuardian.co.uk recorded the highest number of UK visitors out of all the newspaper websites in 2008, according to Nielsen Online.

The Guardian’s website grew 14 per cent year-on-year and attracted 3.459 million unique visitors; it was followed by the The Daily Telegraph’s site, which rose 23 per cent to 3.142 million visitors.

The Times came third with 42 per cent growth to 2.896 million and The Sun fourth, up 43 per cent to 2.71 million.

In total 10.3 million UK Britons visited at least one of the Top 10 newspaper websites.

Alex Burmaster, communications director of Nielsen Online, says: “Regardless of what is happening with print circulations, the major papers have had a fantastic year online, all experiencing strong growth in audience numbers. Almost one in three Britons online now visit at least one of the Top 10 newspapers, 23 per cent more people than did so a year ago.

Nielsen Online also reports that in the magazine sector Auto Trader tops the list with 1.847 million UK visitors, up 4 per cent on 2007. Which? comes in at second place with 1.05 million visitors, up 28 per cent and BBC Good Food takes third place, up 153 per cent to 745,000.
